Background

Ponsonby Community Preschool (formerly Ponsy Kids) is a not for profit preschool which opened in 1998, and is operated by the Ponsonby Community Centre. It was developed with the assistance of Auckland Council.

Ponsonby Community Preschool is licenced for 30 children aged 2-5yrs and is now open 8am – 5:30pm.

We have good teacher/child ratios, and our highly experienced teachers provide a nurturing and educational learning environment for children.

Building strong relationships with our families and the community is very important to us. Being community based and non profit means the aspirations and needs of the families in our community come first. Our teaching philosophy is based on extending children’s learning through their individual and group interests.

Ponsonby Preschool offers 30 Hours FREE for the first 3 months of enrolment for 3-5 year old children (conditons apply). Contact our admin Zobeyah Aara on (09) 376 0896 for a visit.

Our Philosophy

Our committed team strive to implement services and experiences that uplift, inspire and promote united and safe community groups as lifelong learners.

Relationships
Ponsonby Community Preschool is a home away from home for our community of learners.
The children and whanau are at the heart of the learning and teaching environment. We value the importance of trusting, caring and nurturing positive relationships. Through our ongoing collaboration we aim to provide the very best for our community of learners.
At Ponsonby Community Preschool we aim to provide a high-quality learning experience for all. The learning experiences that we design are meaningful, purposeful and based on our knowledge of the Early Childhood Curriculum, Te Whāriki, and our research-based knowledge of the child development.

We view tamariki as competent, capable learners. Kaiako respond to their individual personalities, cultures, ideas, interests, and needs. We have an environment that fosters a child’s sense of belonging and wellbeing, where they know that they have a place to grow and develop into confident lifelong learners.

This enables us to provide our tamariki with a quality learning environment that gives them the best possible learning outcomes.
We are committed to bicultural teaching practices and Te Tiriti O Waitangi through our continued commitment to implementing Te reo maori and tikanga practices. We work collaboratively with whanau and place great value in providing learning opportunities that include the shared aspirations and goals we have for our tamariki. We value children’s and whanau backgrounds, prior knowledge and ensure the provision of inclusive, equitable, multicultural, and diverse learning programme.

The environment as the third teacher
We aim to create a welcoming, responsive learning environment for our tamariki to engage and develop. We believe that the environment plays a vital role provoking, intriguing and sparking curiosity in all corners of our setting.
We provide holistic guidance and support affirming their identity as their learning journey continues to school. We support children and whanau through the transition to school journey, empowering tamariki supporting their independence, self-help skills and confidence to help lay the foundation to love learning.

Programme

We provide an environment in which facilities, equipment and resources enable staff to encourage children to take advantage of opportunities to enjoy, learn and extend themselves and their potential.

We know that experiences in pre-school have a greater potential to enhance the personal success and happiness of individuals than at any other time of their life, and that in the absence of the primary caregiver, the best care and educational interests of the child will be catered for at Ponsonby Preschool. There are planned activities and opportunities for play, learning and interaction, with competent, caring staff and within a group of children.
